A new client in Sugar Land called on us to build a 10 x 14 storage shed for her son’s home. This was during the sweltering heat of September 2024 (tag: sugar land storage shed).

It was one of those cases where the client was unsure of what she wanted. But we provided her enough ideas and options to eventually arrive to a design that she loved.

For starters, we suggested an alternative location for the shed in her large backyard. The original plan was to position it directly in the back. As this spot was directly underneath some power lines, we figured that building it there would eventually create some conflicts with the power company. So we ended up building it off to the right side of the backyard, four feet or so away from the fence.

Sugar Land Storage Shed

The client’s original request was to paint the shed white with black trim. She saw a photo of one of our sheds with this color scheme and figured that’s what she wanted.

Black and white 10 x 10 shed we built in La Porte, Texas

Upon arriving to her backyard, however, we quickly concluded that a black and white shed wouldn’t really mesh with any of the colors of her space. The color of her house was a deep, creamy white. The trim all around was a milky, chocolate brown. Matching those colors with the shed was the obvious way to go, so that’s what we did.

The cream we chose was Sherwin Williams’ White Mocha. And then we chose PPG’s Monkey Madness for the brown trim.

Shingling An Extremely Hot Roof

We used GAF Weathered Wood shingles, which has brown tones that compliment the other colors. The temperature outside was in the high 90s on the days we were supposed to shingle the roof. We knew better than to install shingles on such a hot day. The problem isn’t that we can’t take the heat … we certainly can! The problem is that the footsteps of our boots on extremely hot shingles would likely damage them. Thus, we made a point to install the shingles early in the morning before it got too hot.

L-shaped Loft and Workbench

From there, we added on several features to this Sugar Land storage shed which the client had requested. We added an L-shaped loft spanning the back 14-foot wall and one of the 10-foot side walls. And then we did the same at waist height for as a workbench. The result is a ton of usable storage space which fully utilizes the 10 x 14 footprint of this shed with its 8-foot wall height.

We built this shed a little higher off the ground than we usually do. The client was concerned about flooding in this area. For this reason, we built the shed a little higher off the ground. For this reason, we ended up having to come back on a later date to extend the length of the ramp. It was too steep, but we were happy to complete the fix for no extra charge.

In the video below, you can take a virtual tour of the shed to see more of its features.

We also added these Outdoor Solar Barn Lights to the exterior of the shed. And we used this solar indoor light which has a motion detector. So it automatically turns on when you enter the shed at night, which is super helpful.

Our latest storage shed in La Porte, Texas was completed in July of 2024. It was actually in the town of Shoreacres, which is between La Porte and Seabrook.

It’s not often that we get to build in a beachy area. But in this case, we were literally across the street from Trinity Bay. So we enjoyed the breezy wind, seagulls and watery views from our building area. Don’t get me wrong … it was super hot! This was a summer build in the Houston area, after all. There’s no escaping Houston’s summer heat! Nonetheless, we worked under some big, shady trees and got the job done just in time.

10 x 10 Storage Shed in La Porte, Texas

The client had just moved. As a result, she had numerous items in a U-Haul and in her home that she needed to store. She needed it done relatively quickly. We fortunately had room in the schedule to accommodate her schedule.

After considering a few different dimensions for her storage shed, she eventually settled on a 10 x 10. That’s bigger than what she originally had in mind. But she wisely considered that it’s better to have extra space and not need it than to need extra space and not have it.

In our discussions, we also agreed to go with 8 ft side walls instead of the default 6.5 ft walls. This gives her significantly more storage up high. With the side walls 8 ft high, that took the height of the shed’s gable peak to 10 ft (tag: storage shed la porte)

Storage Shed Custom Features

The client requested several custom features for her shed, including interior and exterior lighting. For the exterior, we went with this Outdoor Solar Barn Light. On the inside, we chose this other solar indoor light which includes a motion sensor and remote. A cable runs from the interior light to the back corner of the shed. We cut a hole, ran the cord through it and connected it to its solar panel. It’s very bright, providing plenty of light for this 100 square foot space.

Here’s a closer look at the exterior light, black trim and the flower box. We build and stain these onsite and attached them at the base of the windows.

Down below, we added a heavy duty ramp and lattice pieces at the bottom. The client figured her little dogs would try and go under the shed. The lattice pieces will keep them out, along with any other creatures that would want to take up residence underneath.

Additionally, we ran a ridge vent at the peak of the roof, which allows inner heat to exit the building.

On the inside of the shed, we built and installed four heavy-duty shelves which are ready to hold considerable weight (tag: storage shed la porte).

As for the color scheme, we matched the white color of the house, which was Sherwin Williams’ Pure White. And then opted for their Tricorn Black paint for all trim pieces at the corners and around the doors.

The end result was a fantastic shed that’s built to last for many years. We were excited to get this one done just in time for the client.

If you’re searching on Google for “shed builders near me”, most likely you’re not just searching for any company.

At any time, you know you can visit the local home center and have them build you a shed like the ones you see in their parking lots. You know you have that option. It’s always there.

Despite the big-box-store offering of sheds, however, you’re still searching for a shed builder. This tells me you’re looking for something more than just four walls and a roof. Perhaps you have unique needs, custom requirements or other concerns that a generic crew won’t accommodate or even listen to.

REQUEST A QUOTE

That’s where we step in. That scenario is precisely where we thrive as shed builders. At The Houston Shed Company, we take pride in offering superior service to our clients in Houston and all surrounding cities. Our clients often tell us that they started their search online with that phrase, “shed builders near me”. But once they discovered us, they knew they didn’t need to look any further.

Another Search for “Shed Builders Near Me” Leads to The Houston Shed Company

A recent client in the Alvin area originally requested an 8 x 10 shed. We sent her a variety of photos of past 8 x 10 sheds we built. We invited her over to see one in person. With that visit, she immediately knew she needed a bigger shed. We then proceeded to plan for a 10 x 10 with 8 foot walls.

She had questions about a shed’s foundation and how it would perform on uneven ground. We answered all those questions. From there, she had custom colors she wanted for the walls and trim … to match her house. She wanted a lattice at the base to prevent her dogs from going underneath the shed. And then she requested heavy-duty shelving, a ramp, flower boxes, plus interior and exterior lighting. We fully accommodated every request and she now loves her shed.

Just like so many other shoppers online, she began her search with “shed builders near me.” Upon experiencing the service and attention to detail we provided during the planning phase, she knew the actual build would match that same level of excellence. Her search for a shed builder was over. She chose The Houston Shed Company.

Leave us your contact info below and we’ll promptly contact you. We’re excited about building a shed for you!

A gable style roof is a classic, practical choice for sheds and other outbuildings. Recognized by its triangular shape, where two sloping sides meet at a ridge, this design has stood the test of time due to its simplicity, efficiency and aesthetic appeal. (tag: gable roof shed)

Structural Simplicity and Cost-Effectiveness of a Gable Roof Shed

One of the primary advantages of a gable roof shed is its structural simplicity. The straightforward design makes it relatively easy to construct on a solid foundation, even for DIY enthusiasts. This simplicity translates into cost savings on both materials and labor. With fewer components and a more straightforward assembly process, building a gable roof can be accomplished quickly and efficiently.

Excellent Drainage and Weather Resistance

The sloping nature of a gable roof provides excellent drainage. Rain, snow, and debris naturally slide off the sides, reducing the risk of water pooling and subsequent damage. This is particularly beneficial in regions with heavy precipitation or snowfall. The efficient drainage helps to prevent leaks and extends the lifespan of the roofing materials, ensuring the shed remains dry and protected from the elements.

Enhanced Ventilation and Insulation

Gable roofs also offer superior ventilation options. The triangular shape creates an attic space, which can be utilized for ventilation. Proper ventilation is crucial in preventing moisture buildup and reducing heat in the summer months. By incorporating vents at the gables or ridge, air can circulate effectively, maintaining a more consistent internal temperature and protecting the contents of the shed from extreme weather conditions.

Increased Storage Space

Another significant advantage of a gable style roof is the additional storage space it provides. The attic area created by the sloping sides can be used to store items that are not frequently needed. This extra space is particularly useful in smaller sheds where maximizing storage is essential. Shelves or lofts can be installed to keep seasonal items, tools, or other belongings organized and out of the way.

Aesthetic Appeal

Gable roofs are aesthetically pleasing, adding a touch of traditional charm to any shed. The classic design complements a wide variety of architectural styles and can be customized with different roofing materials, such as shingles, metal, or tiles, to match the look of the main house or surrounding buildings. The symmetry and clean lines of a gable roof enhance the overall appearance of the shed, making it a visually appealing addition to the property.

Durability and Longevity

Lastly, gable roofs are known for their durability and longevity. The slope and design help to withstand strong winds, as the wind can easily pass over the roof without creating excessive pressure on the structure. This makes gable roofs a suitable option in areas prone to high winds or storms. With proper maintenance, a gable roof can last for many years, providing reliable protection and value for the investment.

In summary, a gable style roof is an excellent choice for sheds, offering simplicity in construction, effective drainage, enhanced ventilation, additional storage space, aesthetic appeal, and durability. Its practical benefits and classic look make it a popular option for both functional and decorative purposes.

The answer to whether or not you really need a foundation under storage shed will depend on your circumstances and how you intend to use the shed. (tag: do storage sheds need foundation)

In a perfect world with a big budget, yes … build your shed on top of a solid concrete slab. It’ll be a secure foundation for decades. A concrete slab, however, will add time and hundreds of dollars to your project. Therefore, you may opt for another popular option for your shed floor. Or you may choose to have no floor at all. Just four walls and a roof over dirt and grass. We’ve seen it done a variety of ways. So let’s get into the details.

Do Storage Sheds Need a Foundation

Foundations serve a vital purpose in the construction of buildings, providing stability and support. Traditionally, structures like houses and larger buildings require a solid foundation to ensure they withstand the test of time and environmental factors. However, storage sheds, being smaller in scale, raise the question whether a foundation is truly necessary.

First, let’s consider one important point. You’re concerned about this topic enough to seek info on it and read an article like this one. You’re actually researching the topic. This tells me you’re not the type of person who will be ok with a dirty or uneven floor.

With no foundation of any kind, moisture, insects and other creatures will have free reign in your shed. They will have as much access to the shed as you do. This makes the items you keep in the shed vulnerable to getting dirty and damaged.

I once had a shed like this when I lived in Florida. Every morning, I’d go in there and it was clear that lizards and bugs had walked all over my tools the night before. Plus, my belongings would often be wet due to the morning dew. In case you didn’t know, rust develops quickly on tools that repeatedly get wet.

Then again, that didn’t really matter to me since it was a terribly old, worn out shed. And I knew we would soon be moving.

Maybe your situation is the same. Perhaps you just need walls and a roof over your stuff and it doesn’t matter if it’s clean or dry. Or maybe your shed is just temporary. If that’s your case, sure … go ahead and proceed without a floor and save money.

Different Types of Shed Floors

However, I suspect that most you won’t be ok with a bug-infested shed in which the floor is occasionally muddy. You’re looking at your future shed not only for its convenience. But also for its long-term value as an investment in your property. That being the case, let’s look at a few types of shed foundations and explore their pros and cons.

1. Concrete Slab

If you’ll have lots of heavy machinery in your shed, you already know you need a concrete slab under it. When I say “lots of heavy machinery,” I mean more than one machine that weighs 500 to 700 pounds. If you have only one of these, you can go with one of the lighter-duty options for a floor. But if you have a riding lawnmower, ATVs and other like-sized machines, get a concrete floor.

Once in place, you’ll have no worries about the weight of the stuff in your shed. You’ll also have no concerns about any creatures crawling under or through your shed floor. There will be none.

Keep in mind, however, that getting a concrete slab will likely mean you must deal with two different contractors. It’s unlikely that a company specializing in high-quality slabs will also build you a high-quality shed … and vice versa. Don’t ask a contractor to do what he’s not used to doing.

Also, once the slab is poured, it will be days or maybe even weeks before the slab is ready to build upon. This may be further delayed by bad weather and the constantly-changing schedules of contractors.

2. Joist Floor on Gravel Pad

Another great option for a shed foundation is to build with pressure treated lumber on top of a gravel base. This typically requires the construction of a wooden perimeter that will reliably hold several inches of gravel for many years.

If you properly level the perimeter, you’ll have no trouble leveling the gravel within it. On top of the gravel base, you will then build a wooden floor with a standard joist design. If your gravel pad is level, your floor will be level too. In the following video by @Everyotherkarl, he capably demonstrates every step of the process.

Pouring a concrete slab is a hard-core task that is best for those who have vehicles to transport lots of concrete. A gravel pad, on the other hand, is a task you can DIY. Keep in mind, however, that it does require some heavy shovel work. Also know that it’s no fun to transport all the gravel from wherever they deliver it to where it needs to go. That’s a lot of heavy wheelbarrows. But if you need the exercise, go for it! You’ll sleep great that night. (tag: do storage sheds need foundation)

Another advantage of a joist floor on a gravel pad is that rainwater will nicely drain through it. This prevents the wooden structure from long-term water exposure. It’s good for the wood to have a chance to dry rather than sitting in water.

As for the cost, a joist floor on top of a gravel pad can be one of the more expensive options. Whereas a concrete slab enables you to avoid the material cost of a wooden floor, a gravel pad hits you with the cost of the gravel AND the cost of the wooden floor.

3. Joist Floor Elevated by Concrete Blocks or Piers

Lastly, and probably the simplest of all your options, is to build a joist floor and elevate it onto concrete blocks. This is our usual practice at The Houston Shed Company. With properly-placed blocks, you can easily create a square and level foundation for your shed floor, even on sloping grounds.

When a Foundation Might Not Be Necessary

1. Portable Sheds

Lightweight and portable sheds are designed to be moved easily. They often come with built-in flooring or can be placed directly on level ground without the need for a traditional foundation.

2. Temporary Storage

If your shed is intended for short-term or seasonal use, and you don’t plan on storing heavy items, a foundation may be an unnecessary expense.

3. Budget Constraints

For those on a tight budget, skipping a foundation may be a practical choice, especially if the shed’s intended use doesn’t require the additional stability.

In conclusion, a well-constructed foundation enhances the overall structural integrity of the storage shed, reducing the risk of sagging or leaning over time. Elevating the shed with a foundation helps to keep the structure above ground level, reducing the risk of moisture seeping into the floor and causing rot or damage to stored items.

While a foundation can offer added stability and protection, it might not be essential for all situations. Evaluate your specific circumstances, and weigh the advantages and disadvantages to make the most informed decision for your storage shed project.

Storage sheds are a practical and popular solution for homeowners looking to declutter their homes or create additional space for tools, equipment, or seasonal items. As you embark on the journey of acquiring a storage shed, one crucial question often arises – can we build a shed for you? You’re doing your planning and research to get a shed. Good for you. From the outset, the most important and obvious question to ask is this: Do you need a permit to build a shed in Texas? We’ll answer this question and a few others in this post.

First things first, what is a building permit? It’s official permission from your local authorities to have something built on your property. Of course, we can debate whether or not it’s right or fair that we need anyone’s permission to build anything on our property. It’s our property, isn’t it? Anyway, as of now, that’s the way it is and those are the rules we have to follow.

There is a whole set of rules for builds within your residence or attached to it. Adding extra rooms, remodeling a kitchen or building a deck, for example, are considering residential construction. Sheds, on the other hand, have a more-lenient set of regulations. Or at least is Texas, they do. Sheds are typically built in backyards or other open spaces on a property….some distance away from the main structure.

Do You Need a Permit to Build a Shed in Texas?

Here’s the short answer to the question; it depends. If your proposed shed meets any of the criteria below, you will need a permit:

its area is 200 square feet or more

you will use the shed for work, business or as a living space

its overall height (from ground to peak) is 15 feet or more

The above-mentioned criteria applies to Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Houston and Austin.

Of course, there are several other municipalities which surround these cities which may have their own rules. Your local building department is the definitive authority on these rules. You could certainly contact them for firm answers, advice and zoning regulations.

But we’ll save you a little time by highlighting the rules that specifically apply here in Texas.

For most of the sheds we build, permits are not needed.
