This 8 x 12 storage shed was built for a client in the Anniston community in Katy, Texas 77493.

One of the biggest factors on this project was the HOA. The shed had to stay at least 5 feet away from the fence, and the overall height could not exceed 8 feet. That meant our usual 5:12 roof pitch was not going to work very well here.

Designing Around the HOA Height Limit

Instead, we built the shed with a 3:12 roof pitch. That saved us roughly 8 inches in roof height and allowed us to keep our normal 73-inch-high doors. If we had stayed with a 5:12 roof, we would have had to shorten the walls and doors quite a bit to stay under the HOA height limit. The lower roof pitch ended up being a good compromise because the client still got a normal, comfortable door height without exceeding the neighborhood restrictions.

The front of the shed is the 12-foot wall, which faces west. We centered a set of double doors on that wall with an 18 x 27 window on each side. The double doors have a 4-foot-wide opening, which gives plenty of room for moving lawn equipment, tools, storage totes, and other larger items in and out.

We suggested Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray SW 7015 for the siding and Sherwin-Williams Black Fox SW 7020 for the doors, trim, and overhangs. The darker Black Fox works especially well with the black hinges, door hardware, and black drip edge. We finished the roof with Weathered Wood architectural shingles and matching ridge caps.

As with most of our sheds, we used LP SmartSide siding. The shed also has our standard 4-inch roof overhangs, painted Black Fox to match the trim.

The framing is fairly straightforward. We used double top plates, with the wall studs and roof trusses spaced 24 inches on center. For the floor, we used LP Legacy subflooring.

Foundation and Drainage

The foundation took a little more thought because the shed sits in a slightly lower part of the backyard. It is basically centered in a small valley where water could naturally collect during a heavy rain. We used a total of 12 TuffBlocks. At each block location, we removed the grass, leveled and tamped the ground, and added river rock underneath the block. That gives the foundation a stable base while also allowing water to drain around the supports rather than just sitting underneath them.

Access to the backyard was through a typical residential gate, about 36 inches wide. That was not an issue for us because we build our sheds on site. We simply brought the materials through the gate piece by piece and built the shed in the backyard.

The client kept this shed very simple. There is no ramp, shelving, loft, or other add-on package. It is just a clean, practical 8 x 12 storage shed designed specifically to fit the space and stay within the HOA rules.
